Watch: BibleProject: The Beatitudes (Matthew 5:3-16)
“Oh, Lord, have mercy on me!”
The cry for mercy always comes from a broken and contrite spirit. It flows from the profound humility of realizing that, compared to a Holy God, we are utterly fallen and undeserving. When we come face-to-face with the majesty and glory of Almighty God, we, like the prophet Isaiah, declare: “Woe to me! I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips…” (Isaiah 6:5).
Have mercy on me, O God!
This cry for mercy is the beginning of true wisdom. It is the honest confession that we desperately need God. Mercy is God not giving us what we actually deserve. Left to ourselves, our sin, rebellion, and selfishness separate us from a holy God.
But God…
…sent His Son, Jesus the Messiah. The perfect Lamb of God became our Savior. Because of Him, we trust, we praise, we worship, and we declare that God is fundamentally good!
Even when we are afraid, even when tomorrow feels uncertain, and even when the world seems to be falling apart around us—we will trust in Him.
Why? Because He has always kept His promises. He has rescued us from darkness and brought us into His marvelous light. He has adopted us as His cherished sons and daughters. We are entirely safe in the mighty hands of Jesus. Therefore, we will not let our hearts be troubled. (Note: notice that this is a choice we have to make!)
From Mercy to Grace
Remember, the sister of Mercy is Grace. If mercy is not getting what we do deserve, grace is God giving us what we don’t deserve.
He freely pours out His salvation, His Holy Spirit, and every beautiful promise in His Word. We may begin on our knees, humbling ourselves before a holy God, but through His grace, we end up dancing and shouting, “Hallelujah! Glory to God in the highest!”
Pray this week: Have mercy on me, O God!
Discussion Questions:
1. The Isaiah Moment: Confronting Holiness
Isaiah’s reaction to God’s holiness was, “Woe to me! I am ruined!” In a culture that often treats God casually, it can be hard to grasp His terrifying majesty.
- Can you look back on a specific moment in your life when you truly caught a glimpse of God’s overwhelming holiness and your own need for mercy? How did that realization change the way you approach Him in prayer?
2. The Weight of a Promise: Trusting in the Dark
We can trust God in uncertain times “because He has kept His promises to us.” When the world is falling apart, our feelings often fight against this truth.
- T When tomorrow feels completely uncertain, which specific promise from God’s Word do you find hardest to anchor yourself to? How can we practically remind ourselves of His past faithfulness when our current circumstances tell us to panic?
3. The Active Choice: Guarding Your Heart
John 14:1 commands us, “Do not let your hearts be troubled.” Remember, we have a choice in the matter—peace isn’t just a feeling that happens to us; it’s a boundary we have to guard.
- What does it practically look like for you to “not let” your heart be troubled on a stressful Tuesday morning? What is one boundary you need to set this week to protect the peace Jesus has given you?
A Word about “Hiding His Word in our Heart.”
This “Summer of Psalms” we are challenging everyone to memorize portions of the Word. Plant the seeds of the Gospel in your heart, so that a harvest of praise will result.
In June, we are asking everyone to memorize Psalm 51:1-12 (Please note: children are being asked to memorize verses 10-12). For consistency and clarity, and understanding we are using the New Living Translation (NLT). Here is Psalm 51:1-12 for you to copy and paste.
Psalm 51
1 Have mercy on me, O God,
because of your unfailing love.
Because of your great compassion,
blot out the stain of my sins.
2 Wash me clean from my guilt.
Purify me from my sin.
3 For I recognize my rebellion;
it haunts me day and night.
4 Against you, and you alone, have I sinned;
I have done what is evil in your sight.
You will be proved right in what you say,
and your judgment against me is just.[a]
5 For I was born a sinner—
yes, from the moment my mother conceived me.
6 But you desire honesty from the womb,[b]teaching me wisdom even there.
7 Purify me from my sins,[c] and I will be clean;
wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.
8 Oh, give me back my joy again;
you have broken me—
now let me rejoice.
9 Don’t keep looking at my sins.
Remove the stain of my guilt.
10 Create in me a clean heart, O God.
Renew a loyal spirit within me.
11 Do not banish me from your presence,
and don’t take your Holy Spirit[d] from me.
12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation,
and make me willing to obey you.
