Weekly Word with Pastor Mark for April 30, 2025: We R2B a People of the Word!

Read: Acts 2:42-47
Watch: https://bibleproject.com/videos/gospel-acts-1/

We’ve just completed our journey through the Gospel of John, focusing on the seven “I AM” statements of Jesus. Through this, we are learning not just about Jesus, but how to live like Jesus—how to let His life shape our own. The question, “What would Jesus do?” (WWJD), remains a powerful guide for discipleship.

To grow as healthy disciples, we must also continue developing our core values—the attributes and characteristics that reflect Christ-likeness in us, formed in partnership with the Holy Spirit.

You might ask yourself: “Who am I to be?” or “What kind of person, with the Spirit’s help, am I called to be?” Try filling in this statement:
“I am to be __________.”
The Bible is full of godly attributes worth striving for. Do these words describe you?
Compassionate, kind, humble, gentle, patient, loving, and forgiving (Colossians 3:12–14).
Can you speak the Fruit of the Spirit over your life—love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control—and say, “These are who I am to be”?

If our personal “I am” statements shape who we are individually, then our corporate calling as the church can be summarized as:
“We are to be ______.”
In other words: We R2B.

In May and June, we’ll be exploring the eight marks of a healthy church as seen in the Book of Acts. As the Holy Spirit forms our character individually, He is also forming us together as the church Jesus intended. We’re not just becoming better people—we are becoming His Body. We R2B.

This week, from Acts 2:42, our focus is:
We R2B a People of the Word.

We are called to devote ourselves to reading, hearing, praying, proclaiming, and living the Word of God. A healthy church is guided by Scripture. Everything we do—every event, program, or practice—must be held up to the light of the Bible.

If something we’re doing isn’t aligned with Scripture, we stop doing it.
If Scripture commands something we’re not doing, we start doing it.
In short, our identity and direction come from the Word of God.

Discussion Questions:

  1. Who are you becoming?

If you were to finish the sentence “I am to be ________,” what word or phrase would you use? Why?

How do you see the Holy Spirit shaping that part of your character right now?

2. Fruit Check:

Which of the Fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22–23) comes most naturally to you? Which one feels hardest to live out?

Corporate “We R2B” Questions

3. Church Identity:

What do you think it means for us, as a church, to say: “We are to be a people of the Word”?

How well do you think our church currently reflects that calling?

4. Aligning with the Word:

Are there things in your life (or church life) that don’t align with Scripture but have gone unchallenged? What might need to change?

Commitment and Challenge

5. Spiritual Disciplines:

What rhythms of Scripture—reading, hearing, praying, proclaiming, and living—do you already practice?

Is there anything you need to stop doing? Anything you need to start doing?
