We are a People of the “Already” and the “Not Yet”
We are a post-resurrection people. Two thousand years ago, as twilight broke on that first Easter Sunday, Jesus rose from the grave. All of Heaven held its breath, knowing what was coming. Then, in a final victory over death and darkness, the Light of the World awoke. The Breath of Heaven took a deep breath! The Heart that beats for you and me began to beat again! He is risen; He is risen indeed!
We are also new-resurrection people. There was a day when your heart was pricked by the Holy Spirit, and your heart of stone was turned into a heart that beats for Jesus. On that day, when you confessed your sins and trusted the living Christ as your Lord and Savior, the Holy Spirit breathed new life into you. Your darkness was turned to light. You were raised to walk in newness of life. You were risen indeed!
So, what does Resurrection mean to you?
Are you like Mary Magdalene? Even in the depths of grief, she went to the tomb. Her first reaction was to cling to the feet of Jesus, wanting to hold onto the moment, even as He commissioned her to go and announce the Good News to the others.
Are you like Peter and John? Upon hearing the news, they ran. You might be like John—fast and eager, yet hesitating at the threshold, unsure if you should believe what you see. Or you might be like Peter—slower, perhaps burdened by past failures, yet rushing straight into the empty tomb to see for yourself that the shroud was empty.
Are you like Thomas? Despite the testimony of those you trust, do you still have your doubts? Perhaps you’ve made an agreement that you won’t believe until He proves Himself to you on your terms—until you can “touch the wounds” for yourself.
Are you like the two on the road to Emmaus? Their “hearts burned within them” as Jesus spoke, yet they didn’t recognize Him until the bread was broken. Once they saw Him, they didn’t wait; they immediately returned to Jerusalem to confirm: “The Lord has really risen!”
The Reality of the Resurrection
- It is more than a belief: It is the foundation of the One in whom we anchor our hope. He is the Resurrected King.
- It is more than history: It is a cosmic shift in reality. Death is defeated; new life in Jesus is now our primary narrative.
- It is more than good news: It is THE Good News.
Jesus is alive! Because He lives, I have resurrection life through the grace of Christ my Lord!
This week, I ask you again: What does Resurrection mean to you?
Seek: Look for the “Emmaus moments” this week—those quiet times when your heart burns within you while reading Scripture or talking with a friend. Where is the living Jesus walking beside you?
Pray: “Lord, move the Resurrection from my head to my heart. Don’t let me settle for a historical fact when You have offered me a living friendship. Open my eyes to see You in the breaking of the bread and the rhythms of my day. Amen.”
Discussion Questions
1. The “Stone-to-Flesh” Moment Pastor Mark writes that we are “new-resurrection” people because our hearts of stone were turned into hearts that beat for Jesus. Looking back at your own journey, can you identify a specific “twilight” moment where your perspective shifted from the darkness of self-reliance to the light of Christ? How does the “beat” of your heart feel different today than it did before you knew Him?
2. Identifying with the Witnesses The “Weekly Word” lists four reactions to the Resurrection: Mary’s clinging, Peter’s rushing, Thomas’s doubting, and the Emmaus disciples’ burning hearts.
- Which of these four “Resurrection temperaments” most closely describes your spiritual life right now?
- Are you in a season of wrestling with doubts (Thomas), or are you currently running toward the empty tomb with a sense of urgency (Peter)?
3. Living in the “Post-Resurrection” Reality If the Resurrection is truly a “cosmic shift in reality” where death is defeated and a new narrative has begun, what is one area of your life (a fear, a habit, or a relationship) that you are still treating as if it were “Pre-Resurrection”? What would it look like to practically apply the “Victory of the Light” to that specific dark corner this week?
