The Gift of Deployment

Do you know your spiritual gift? Every follower of Jesus has been given a specific “grace-gift” intended to build up the Body of Christ. You aren’t just saved; you are deployed.

While spiritual gifts are discussed in several places (see Romans 12:6-8 or 1 Corinthians 12:1-11), here in Ephesians, Paul lists five specific “leadership” gifts. He notes that “these are the gifts Christ gave to the church”—meaning they are communal tools for everyone’s benefit.

The Five-Fold Framework

These functions are centered around the Word of God to keep the Church healthy:

  • Apostles: The “sent ones” who break new ground and ensure we stay true to our foundations.
  • Prophets: The “truth-speakers” who call the church back into alignment with God’s heart.
  • Evangelists: The “gatherers” with a supernatural burden for those outside the faith.
  • Pastors: The “shepherds” who protect, feed, and care for the local flock.
  • Teachers: The “instructors” who help us understand and apply the Word to our lives.

From Individual to Corporate

Paul is clear about the “Why”: “Their responsibility is to equip God’s people to do his work and build up the church.”These aren’t titles of honor for a few; they are functions to equip the many.

While these gifts live in individuals, they also define our corporate identity. As IBC Madrid, we are called to be:

  1. Apostolic: We “send” those who cross cultures to start new works.
  2. Prophetic: We boldly proclaim God’s truth to a wandering world.
  3. Evangelistic: We “search and rescue,” inviting others into the Kingdom through our testimony.
  4. Shepherding: We protect, feed, and care for one another in community.
  5. Teaching: We instruct each other, rooted deeply in the Scriptures.

Reflection

So, how are you doing? Are you using your gift to bless and grow those around you? And how are we doing as a church? Are we effectively exhibiting these five functions in our city?

Let’s move forward together—not just as a crowd, but as a Body.

Pray: Lord, show me the “grace-portion” You have placed in my hands. Help me move from being a consumer of the church to a contributor to the Body.

Discussion Questions: The Architecture of the Body

1. The “Grace-Portion” Inventory In Ephesians 4:7, Paul says each of us has been given a “special gift” according to the generous measurement of Christ.

  • Question: Looking back at the five functions (Apostolic, Prophetic, Evangelistic, Shepherding, Teaching), which one do you feel most naturally drawn to in your daily life? How have you seen God use that “portion” to help someone else recently?

2. The Shift from Consumer to Contributor Pastor Mark noted that the role of leaders is to equip the church to do the work, not to do all the work themselves (v. 12).

  • Question: In what ways has our church (or this small group) helped “equip” you to serve others? Is there a specific area of ministry where you feel ready to move from “learning” to “doing”?

3. Our Corporate Identity in Madrid As a church, we are called to be Apostolic, Prophetic, Evangelistic, Shepherding, and Teaching.

Question: In a city like Madrid, which of these five functions do you think our neighbors need to see most right now? How can our small group specifically exhibit that function in our neighborhood this month?
