Weekly Word: Christ is the Light of the World.

Read: John 9
Pray: Open the eyes of my heart, Lord. I want to see you!

In John chapter nine, Jesus’ disciples inquired about a man who had been born blind. They were assuming a cultural worldview that thought his blindness was the result of someone’s sin (his or his parents).  Jesus corrected their misunderstanding by not only healing the man, but teaching the deeper reality of spiritual blindness versus spiritual sight.      What ensued was a dialogue with the witnesses to the event. The man not only gained physical sight, but spiritual sight when he confessed, “Lord, I believe.” The disciples were again eyewitnesses to the healing. Their cultural blindness was corrected when Jesus said, the man was blind so that the “power of God might be seen in him” (v. 4). The neighbors argued over whether this was indeed the man who had never seen. The Pharisees joined the argument in disbelief as to the validity of the event, which had taken place on the Sabbath. Finally, the healed man made the powerful statement, “…I know this: I was blind, but now I can see!” (v. 25).

We live in a fallen world where people grope in darkness. We, too, were once lost and spiritually blind. Spiritual blindness is when one cannot see or understand the things of the Kingdom of God. For most, spiritual blindness is normal, the way things are. The grace of God the Father sent His Son, Jesus, to be the sacrificial lamb. “Behold the Lamb of God who takes away our sin” when we trust in Him as Lord, and Savior. We have been rescued from the kingdom of darkness and entered the Kingdom of Light. The scales have fallen from our eyes, and we are able to “walk in the light, as He is in the Light” (1 John 1:7), “and the blood of Jesus, his Son, cleanses us from all sin.” Let’s walk boldly in the Kingdom of Light and have real “fellowship with each other!”

Discussion Questions:

Have you seen the Light? How has “the Light of the World,” changed your vision?

What was it like being blind in the kingdom of darkness? How were you rescued?

How are you letting your light shine, so that everyone will praise your Heavenly Father? (Matthew 5:16).
