Praising the King for His Unsearchable Greatness (Psalm 145)
With this prayer-poem the psalmist invites us to enter the intimacy of his confident praise, celebrating the name and greatness of God, His works, His character, and His kingdom. All of these themes the psalmist develops in order, with enormous faith and fervor, including a recitation of God’s self-definition to Moses in Exodus 34:6 (v. 8), and the use of God’s sacred name of Yahweh no less than ten times through the song (underscoring the deep value that these elements of Jewish faith had for David himself). In the troubled times we’re living through, it’s deeply worthwhile to meditate on the attitudes the psalmist manifests here, since he is so sure of how this God of the covenant cares for Israel, and so deeply in love with this One He calls the true King, who would ultimately make Himself known to all the world through the Son of David and His self-sacrifice on our behalf.
