Wait a Minute!
How good are you at waiting?
When your bus or train is running late, how quickly does frustration set in? Or think about standing in line at the grocery store: do you count the shoppers in front of you, switch to a line that looks faster, and then immediately regret it when a price check stalls your new line?
Waiting is hard. Yet David closes this magnificent psalm of trust by encouraging himself—and us—to wait patiently for the Lord.
Crucially, waiting on God isn’t passive inactivity. David calls us to “be brave and courageous” while we wait.
Why do we need bravery and courage? Because we face a real enemy who seeks to steal, kill, and destroy. There are times when life feels like an opposing army surrounding us on all sides. Yet David declares:
“Though a mighty army surrounds me,
my heart will not be afraid.
Even if I am attacked,
I will remain confident“
How could he have such confidence? Because Yahweh is his light, his salvation, and his fortress.
This leads into what might be the ultimate thesis statement of David’s life—the reason he was called a “man after God’s own heart”:
“The one thing I ask of the Lord—
Psalm 27:4
the thing I seek most—
is to live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life,
delighting in the Lord’s perfections
and meditating in his Temple.”
We all face moments that test our patience. We all experience fear and overwhelming pressures. But in those moments, can we honestly make David’s prayer our own? Is residing in the Lord’s presence our singular pursuit?
The Psalms remind us to continually redirect our hearts toward God, trusting Him even when life feels out of control.Today, let your heart cry out:
Pray: ”Father, Jesus, and Holy Spirit: The one thing I ask, the single thing I seek most, is to abide continually in Your presence and fix my focus on You.” Lord, help me to seek Your Kingdom first today. Strengthen my heart as I wait on You, and keep my eyes fixed on Your abiding presence. Amen.
