One motivation for generosity is gratitude. A good starting point is reflecting on what we’re grateful for. Consider making a list of your blessings; what would you include? What would be at the top? Take a moment to create that list.
Another motivation for generosity is love. We love because God first loved us. We give because God first gave to us. God’s love is evident in the beautiful world He created, providing everything we need. He also invites us into a relationship with Him. This began in the Garden of Eden, with God walking with the first man and woman, and continued through His ongoing self-revelation. Ultimately, God’s supreme self-revelation came when He became human and walked among us in Jesus. Jesus invited people into relationship; He invited us into His Kingdom.
Initially, Jesus’ first followers didn’t demonstrate much generosity. However, as they observed Jesus’ interactions and love for people, they learned to be generous themselves. The early church became known for its remarkable acts of generosity. This love and self-sacrifice resulted in deep and lasting communion within their community. They served one another and met each other’s needs, providing a powerful example for us to follow.
We, too, are characterized by generosity, motivated by our love for God and one another. Even in our complex world, we can share with one another and meet spiritual, physical, and emotional needs. We R2B a generous people!
Pray: Jesus, help me to be a more generous person with all I have and all I am. Help me to love and serve others as much as you love and serve me.
